Mair Records a Career-High 23 points in Win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team upended Eastern Kentucky, 76-65, on Tuesday morning at Conte Forum.Â
The Eagles improve to 9-4 on the season while the Colonels fall to 4-6.Â
Taina Mair turned in a career day with a personal-high 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The freshman did most of her damage in the first half with 17 points. She also hit a career-high four 3-pointers.Â
Dontavia Waggoner turned in 14 points, five rebounds and caused havoc on defense with a game-high four steals. Maria Gakdeng chipped in with 14 points and eight off the glass.Â
Contributions came from across the board, as six players scored at least seven points. Six players grabbed at least five rebounds to help lead a plus-23 rebounding margin. Ally VanTimmeren's career-high 10 boards led the attack on the glass. She also had eight points off the bench.Â
The Colonels got off to a 16-9 start in the opening 6:23 of the game after starting the game 6-for-8 from the field. BC struggled from the field in the first quarter, which led to a 22-14 lead for the visitors before Waggoner and Mair scored on back-to-back possessions to slice the gap to four going into the second quarter.Â
BC dominated the second quarter by outscoring EKU, 24-8. The Eagles put together a 12-0 run and held the Colonels scoreless over a 5:33 stretch, leading to a 36-25 advantage. Mair ended the half with a jumper that gave the hosts a 42-30 lead. The defense held EKU to 2-of-13 shooting from the field and forced eight turnovers.Â
EKU got the game back to within nine midway through the third before the Eagles scored 13 of the next 15 points to stretch the lead to their largest 20 points. BC pulled away for good, as it never trailed by no less than 11 points.Â
Boston College turned 21 EKU turnovers into 27 points and dominated the glass, 53-30, while the Eagles also grabbed 20 offensive rebounds.Â
ACC play returns on Sunday, where the Eagles host Georgia Tech in the sixth game of a seven-game homestand. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Conte Forum.Â
