November 07, 2022 | Men's Basketball
Freshman forward finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two steals
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Prince Aligbe's layup with 0.9 seconds left propelled Boston College to a 79-77 opening night win over Cornell. Tied at 77-77 with 17.7 left in regulation, Makai Ashton-Langford set up the gamewinner, finding the freshman in the paint for the go-ahead bucket.
Aligbe finished with a team-high 16 points, nine rebounds, and two steals in 24 minutes.
Boston College led by as many as 12 points early on in the game, after a CJ Penha Jr. layup made it 16-4 with 13:26 left in the first half. Cornell would chip away at the Eagles' lead by way of the 3-pointer, using an 13-1 push late in the half, tying it at 33-all. BC would lead 43-41 at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles pushed its lead to eight, after a T.J. Bickerstaff layup made it 51-43 with 15:41 to go. But the Big Red would go on a 15-2 surge, taking a 58-53 lead with 11 minutes to play. Cornell would extend its lead to six - 71-65 - with 4:45 left, before eight unanswered points by BC - four from Aligbe and four from Ashton-Langford - put the Eagles ahead, 73-71, with 3:04 to go. An Aligbe layup made it 77-72 with just under two minutes to go, but Cornell would again tie it up, knocking down a 3-ball with 30 seconds left, setting up the final gamewinner from the Eagles.
Four other Eagles scored in double figures. CJ Penha scored 15 points (6-8 FG), while T.J. Bickerstaff logged one of the most complete stat lines in the ACC - 12 points, 10 boards, four assists, five steals, and two blocked shots. Ashton-Langford added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals while Jaeden Zackery logged 11 points, seven assists, and four steals. BC's 16 steals were the most in a single-game since Nov. 20, 1999 (19 vs. New Hampshire).
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Nov. 11 when it hosts Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m. at Conte Forum.
