Eagles Soar Past Rutgers in ACC/B1G Challenge Win

Four Eagles Score in Double Figures
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a convincing 75-61 victory over Rutgers in the ACC/B1G Ten Challenge on Wednesday evening in Conte Forum.Â
BC improves to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 at home, while the Scarlet Knights are 4-5.Â
Four Eagles scored in double figures, with Maria Gakdeng turning in a game-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. JoJo Lacey fired in 14 points with five rebounds and four steals.
Taina Mair flirted with a triple double-of 14 points, a game-high 11 assists, seven rebounds and five steals in 39 minutes play. It was the freshman's first double-double of her career. Andrea Daley chipped in with 10 points while six came at the line. Dontavia Waggoner put up nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and three steals.Â
The Eagles sprung out of the gate with a 5-of-6 start from the field en route to a 12-2 lead in the first 3:07 of the contest. Lacey and Mair drilled 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions before Lacey and Daley capped off the run with three straight layups.Â
Rutgers got back in the contest by scoring 18 of the next 26 points over the final 6:53 to slice the deficit going into the second period, leading to a 22-20 edge in favor of BC.Â
BC began the second with baskets on three straight possessions that stretched the back to double digits, 30-20. The Eagles wouldn't lead by no less than six points, eventually jumping out to their largest lead in the first half at 13 after a Waggoner layup.Â
BC went into the half with a 43-32 edge at the break - the 43 points this season is the most in any half for the Eagles.Â
A dominating third quarter in which BC outscored Rutgers, 17-5, and held the visitors to just one field goal that led to the Eagles pulling away for good for their second straight win in the ACC/B1G Challenge.Â
The BC defense forced Rutgers into a season-high 25 turnovers that led to 27 points and owned the paint with a 36-12 showing. The Eagles also assisted on 18 of their 26 field goals.
Boston College aims for a 2-0 week on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it welcomes Boston University in the Battle of Comm. Ave.Â
