Valdez Earns Scanlan Award; Flowers Honored with Flynn MVP Award

Eagles recognize 12 seniors at annual team banquet.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team hosted its annual senior awards banquet on Sunday afternoon. Defensive end Marcus Valdez (Perth Amboy, N.J.) wsas honored with the Scanlan Award; BC football's highest honor given to the senior who best embodies the ideals of Tom Scanlan, class of 1920.
A courageous and inspiring fullback, who played both offense and defense for the Eagle team of 1916, 1917 and 1919, forgoing the 1918 season for military service in World War I, Thomas F. Scanlan was a popular student-athlete and beloved alumnus, who was elected Varsity Club President for five consecutive years (1942-46). He was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.
Valdez, a six-year member of the Eagles and five-time letterwinner, was a four-year starter and two-time captain. He played in 57 career games with 133 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, six fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles. In 2022, he posted 30 tackles, 8.5 TFLs and four sacks, while earning ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week following the Eagles's upset win at No. 16 North Carolina State.
Wide receiver Zay Flowers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was the recipient of the William J. Flynn MVP Award. Flowers broke every major receiving record at BC in his senior season; pushing to the top of the chart in receptions (200), receiving yards (3,056) and receiving touchdowns (29). For the season, he caught 78 passes, which is tied for the most in a single season, and posted the fourth 1,000-yard season by an Eagle with 1,077 yards to go with a record 12 touchdown receptions.
