Zay Flowers and Pat Garwo both eclipse century mark on Senior Night
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College closed out the 2022 season with a 32-23 loss to Syracuse on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Eagles made big plays early on in the game to jump out to a 10-0 first quarter lead. On the first drive of the game, Bryce Steele forced a turnover on a strip sack of Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader. BC was able to turn that into three points, as Connor Lytton was good from 28 yards.
Edwin Kolenge blocked a Syracuse punt, deep in Orange territory, setting up a record-setting touchdown for Zay Flowers. He connected with Emmett Morehead on a seven-yard strike, making it 10-0 with 10:47 to go in the opening frame. The touchdown for Flowers was his 11th of the season - setting a new Boston College single-season record - and the 28th of his career, tying him with Kelvin Martin '87 for the all-time TD receptions mark.
Syracuse got on the board with 2:18 left in the half on a 47-yard field goal and it was 10-3 at the break.
The Orange added another field goal late in the third quarter, making it 10-6 with 1:34 to go in the period.
Pat Garwo III's four-yard plunge with 12:58 to play extended the BC lead to 17-6. Syracuse cut into the Eagles' lead with a touchdown with 9:56 to go, after the Orange kept its drive alive due to a roughing the passer call deep in their own territory. But the Cuse's two-point attempt failed, making it 17-12.
The Orange would take the lead on a touchdown, capping a three-play, 75 yard drive with 7:05 remaining. The two-point try again failed, making it 18-17. After another score and a turnover on downs, the Orange added to the lead on a Sean Tucker touchdown run. The Eagles got one back in the final seconds, on a two-yard touchdown from Emmett Morehead to Zay Flowers, giving Flowers the most career receiving touchdowns in Boston College history (29).
