Waggoner Nets Career-High 18 pts; Gakdeng Scores Go-Ahead Basket
BOSTON - In a contest that came down to the wire, Boston College women's basketball outlasted Northeastern in a 64-59 triumph on Wednesday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
The Eagles made the final quarter their best one, outscoring Northeastern, 17-8, highlighted by an 11-4 surge over the final 5:09 en route to a 2-2 mark and their first road win of the season.Â
Dontavia Waggoner led the Eagles with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, totaled four rebounds, and came away with five steals. Andrea Daley also hit a career mark with 12 points off the bench, while JoJo Lacey chipped in with 11
Maria Gakdeng totaled six points and a season-high 15 rebounds (nine offensive) with a pair of blocked shots. Taina Mair scored four points with a career-high eight rebounds and four assists.Â
After Northeastern scored four straight points to take a 59-58 lead, Gakdeng stepped up with an offensive rebound and putback for the go-ahead score. An NU turnover led to Mair hitting two free throws, and then a defensive stop put Mair back at the line. Despite missing both attempts, she came away with the offensive board that led to T'Yana Todd icing the game at the charity stripe for the Eagles' ninth straight win in the series.Â
Todd stepped up by scoring seven of her nine points in the final half (five in the fourth), starting with the trifecta that gave BC a 58-55 edge.Â
BC forced Northeastern to miss 15 of its final 20 shot attempts and held the Huskies to just 4-of-13 shooting in the final quarter. The visitors were shooting 48.7 percent through the first three frames.
Boston College got off to a strong start by scoring 24 points in the first quarter. Waggoner and Daley scored the final nine points of the period to give the Eagles a five-point cushion going into the second.Â
It was a close affair in the second in which BC never led by more than five, leading to a 35-33 first-half advantage going into the half.Â
Northeastern took advantage of the Eagles' miscues in the third quarter that led to its largest lead at eight points. Waggoner scored the next five points to slice the gap to three. The Huskies stretched the lead back to seven, but not before Lacey canned a trey to bring the deficit back to four going into the fourth.Â
Boston College returns to action on Sunday against Providence at 12 p.m. in Conte Forum.Â
