BC Athletics has received a $1 million gift from Don and Roxanne Mayer for the Mayer Family Head Fencing Coach position.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College Athletics has received a $1 million gift from Don and Roxanne Mayer to endow the head fencing coach position on the Heights. Reigning ACC Men's Fencing Coach of the Year, Brendan Doris-Pierce, will be the first Mayer Family Head Fencing Coach.
"We are so blessed at Boston College to have so many generous and passionate supporters who believe in our mission and in our student-athletes," said William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Pat Kraft. "We are grateful for the Mayers and their impactful and long-lasting gift to our fencing program. Both Don and Roxanne have been tremendous supporters and advocates of our fencing program for many years and we are thrilled that our head coaching position will now bear their name."
The Mayers have strong ties to Boston College fencing as their son, Cameron, is a 2019 Boston College graduate and a four-year member and two-time captain of the fencing team. Cameron earned his bachelor's degree in finance from the Carroll School of Management. He received Northeast Fencing Conference First Team All-Star honors in 2019 and was named the conference's Elliot Lilien Award winner for combining competitive success with excellent sportsmanship.Â
"Our family is honored to be able to support BC fencing, which holds a special place in our hearts. Endowing this position shows our belief in the future of the program as well as the direction of Boston College Athletics under Pat Kraft," said the Mayers. "We look forward to watching Boston College student-athletes succeed in the classroom and on the strip for years to come."
Under the direction of Brendan Doris-Pierce, the Boston College fencing program sent a program-record 11 qualifiers – six men and five women – to the 2021 NCAA Fencing Championships. Doris-Pierce was named the ACC Men's Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, which was his third at the helm of the Eagles.
"On behalf of the fencing program, our student-athletes and our alumni, I would like thank Don and Roxanne for this incredible gift," said Doris-Pierce. "I am honored to be the first Mayer Family Fencing Head Coach. We can't wait to build on last year's success and have a great season in 2021-22."
