Eagles and Irish Battle to 1-1 Draw in ACC Opener
September 10, 2021 | Men's Soccer
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College played a man up for 75 minutes but had to settle for a point on Friday night as the Eagles and Notre Dame Fighting Irish played to a 1-1 draw at the Newton Soccer Complex in the ACC opener for both teams.
BC remained unbeaten at 2-0-1 on its four-match homestand and moved to 2-1-1 overall. The Irish pushed its record to 1-2-1.
Stefan Sigurdarson's third goal of the season gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. The Icelandic junior took a subtle pass from Michael Suski in the left side of the Notre Dame box and fired a low left-footed shot to the opposite corner.
Notre Dame went down to 10 men in the 35th minute when Tyler Shea received a straight red card for a sliding challenge against Victor Souza in the Boston College defensive third.
Playing down a man, the Fighting Irish equalized just before halftime with only 1:45 on the clock. Josh Ramsey lofted a ball to Matthew Roou in the right side of the BC box and Roou cut back to his left foot before finding the bottom left corner.
Boston College dominated the second half, out-shooting Notre Dame 8-0 while holding an 8-0 advantage in corners, but could not find the go-ahead goal.
Amos Shapiro-Thompson hit the crossbar on a left-footed effort with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. Shapiro-Thompson later connected on a right-footed volley from 20 yards out in the final seconds but Bryan Dowd came up with the save.
Boston College completes its homestand next Tuesday (Sept. 14) against Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
