
Eagles Top Gaels In Season Opener

BC earned a 5-0 win at Iona in the first game of the 2021 season.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Boston College women's soccer team earned a season-opening 5-0 win over the Iona Gaels on Thursday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 21' | After taking a ball on the right flank from Mia Karras, Sam Smith cut in towards the penalty area and slotted a ball towards the spot. Linda Boama took one touch and then struck the ball inside the far left post.
- 40' | Zoie Allen took a ball across the edge of the 18 and took on a defender. The sophomore took a left-footed shot towards the net, with it deflecting off of a defender and past the goalkeeper.
- 63' | Smith ran on to a corner kick service from Jenna Bike and was able to head it back across the goal.
- 74' | From outside the box, Jessica Carlton lofted a free kick to the far post and Boama headed it down inside the post.
- 87' | Taliyah Walker found Rebecca Groseibl on the right side of the box and she in turn slotted a ball ahead to Ella Richards to touch and then strike over a charging goalkeeper.
GAME NOTES
- Boston College is now 1-0-0 in the all-time series with Iona … the Eagles now have a mark of 16-1-0 all-time against current MAAC schools.
- The Eagles are now 22-15-4 all-time in the first game of the season.
- Linda Boama's goal marked the first of the sophomore's collegiate career … she went on to collect a brace.
- Goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt made her collegiate debut and first career start … she finished with four saves in earning her first collegiate shutout.
- This marked the second time in her career that Sam Smith had at least one goal and one assist in a game.
- Jessica Carlton picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on Boama's second goal.
- Ella Richards registered her first career goal and point … Taliyah Walker picked up an assist on the score for her first collegiate point.
- Boston College had a 23-5 lead in shots and an 11-0 lead in corner kicks.
- In addition to Willebrandt, Éabha O'Mahony also made her first collegiate start and appearance while Andi Barth, Ella Richards, Sarai Costello, Carlton and Walker all made their collegiate debuts off the bench.
- Graduate students Haley Thomas and Abby McNamara made their BC debuts.
- The Eagles will host UMass on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. in the home-opener.
