Eagles Open Up 2021 at Iona on Thursday

The women's soccer team will travel to New York to face the Gaels.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College women's soccer team will kick off its 2021 season on Thursday, Aug. 19, traveling to face the Iona Gaels in a 1 p.m. match at Mazzella Field. The game is set to be streamed via ICGaels.com.

A WIN OVER IONA WOULD . . .
• Move the Eagles to 1-0-0 on the year.
• Give BC a 1-0-0 record in the all-time series with Iona with a mark of 16-1-0 against current MAAC schools.
• Bump BC's record in the season-opening game to 22-15-4.
ABOUT IONA
• Iona finished eighth in the MAAC last year, earning a playoff bid ... the Gaels played an abbreviated season, going 1-4-1 over the course of a spring slate.
• Nicole Whitley scored three goals for Iona while Kiera Haggerty added one ... both Whitley, a graduate student, and Haggerty, a junior, are back for the 2021 season.
• Angelina DeCicco and Emma Havrilla both saw time in goal last season for Iona ... DeCicco went 1-1-0 with a 1.97 goals against average and .688 save percentage while Havrilla was 0-3-1 with a 3.22 goals against average and .571 save percentage ... Havrilla now enters her senior season for the Gaels.
• Todd Plourde is beginning this third season at the helm of the Gaels ... Iona went 7-11-2 in his first year and 1-4-1 in his second.
SERIES HISTORY VS IONA
• This is the first-ever meeting between Iona and Boston College.
• The Eagles are 15-1-0 all-time against current MAAC schools, picking up wins over Quinnipiac (3-0-0), Monmouth (1-1-0), Fairfield (9-0-0) and Marist (2-0-0).
UP NEXT
• The Eagles will host UMass on Sunday, Aug. 22 in the home-opener ... kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Complex.
EAGLES IN THE SEASON OPENER
• Since 1981, the Eagles are 21-15-4 all-time in the first game of the season.
• Last year's season-opener came at Notre Dame on Oct. 1, 2020 ... the Eagles dropped a 2-0 at Notre Dame.
THE 2021 CAPTAINS
• The Eagles are led by Jenna Bike, Mia Karras and Michela Agresti in 2021.
• This is the second consecutive year that Bike and Karras are captaining the Eagles while Agresti is a first-time captain.
• In 2021, Bike started all 14 contests for the Eagles in her return to the pitch from injury ... the graduate student finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
• Karras, a graduate student, played and started all 14 of BC's contests last season.
• Agresti has started all 32 game that BC has played in her first two seasons on the Heights ... the defender has played at least 90 minutes in 31 of 32 games.
NEW FACES
• Boston College's roster features nine players who weren't on the 2020 roster, with two new graduate transfers and seven new freshmen.
• Haley Thomas (Weber State) and Abby McNamara (Wake Forest) both come to the Heights with four years of collegiate experience.
• Meanwhile Wiebke Willebrandt and Taliyah Walker were on the 2020-21 roster, they did not suit up for the Eagles.
• Additionally, the Eagles have also welcomed a new associate head coach in Taylor Schram and a Director of Soccer Analytics in Kylie Spencer.
SISTER ACT
• The Eagles have two sets of sisters on the roster this season.
• Samantha and Michela Agresti are in their third season together as Eagles.
• Sophomore Emma Goggins is joined this season by her younger sister, Kate Goggins.
INTERNATIONAL APPEAL
• The Eagles are a diverse group, having five different countries and 14 different states represented on the team roster of 28.
• The most represented state for BC is Massachusetts, which is called home by six players ... five Eagles hail from California ... 12 states can claim one Eagle each.
• Canada has two players represented while Iceland, Ireland and Germany each have one representative on the roster ... 23 players are from the United States.
ACTIVE SCORING LEADERS
• Jenna Bike is BC's active scoring leader with 38 points on 14 goals and 10 assists.
• Sam Smith is the second-highest active scorer with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists.
THE PRESEASON
• The Eagles reported for preseason on Aug. 2 and began training on Aug. 3.
• BC took on Army and Colgate in exhibition matches ... the Eagles traveled to face the Cadets on Saturday, Aug. 7 before returning home to host Colgate on Thursday, Aug. 12, picking up a pair of 1-0 wins.
THE 2020-21 QUICK HITS
• The Eagles went 3-10-1, picking up wins over Syracuse (3-1), UAlbany (3-0) and Northeastern (1-0).
• Sam Smith led Boston College in points, goals and assists during the 2020-21 season with 13 points off of five goals and three assists.
• Jenna Bike was second on the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points ... Bike had a team-leading 40 shots and 20 shots on goal.
• Laura Gouvin had a team-leading two game-winning goals and was third on the team with four points on two goals and two assists.
• Allie Augur went 3-9-1 with two shutouts a 1.79 goals against average and .721 save percentage ... Mackenzie Egan saw time in three games, going 0-1-0 with a .727 save percentage and 2.33 goals against average.
ABOUT HEAD COACH JASON LOWE
• Jason Lowe was named the program's fifth head coach on Jan. 9, 2019.
• Lowe arrived on the Heights after serving on the coaching staff at Wake Forest since 2014, including 2017 and 2018 as associate head coach.
• The Shaker Heights, Ohio native helped the Demon Deacons reach the NCAA tournament Round of 32 in 2017 and the Sweet 16 in 2018.
• Prior to Wake Forest, Lowe served as an assistant coach at Alabama for five seasons and two years at Emory.
• Lowe served as a goalkeeper for the Wake Forest men's soccer team from 1994-97.
• In addition to receiving his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest in 1998, Lowe also earned his MBA in 2002.
