Seven Eagles signed to play on The Cape.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Summer baseball returns in full force for 2021. After the Covid-19 pandemic shut down many leagues across the country, most notably the Cape Cod Baseball League, the Boston College baseball team has placed 24 student-athletes in wood-bat collegiate summer leagues that open play as early as this week.
Â
The historic Cape League features seven Eagles committed for this summer and hosts the latest opening day on June 20. Catcher Peter Burns (Reading, Mass.) returns to the Cape for his second stint with the Bourne Braves and left-hander Joey Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.), who is in line for a sixth-year of eligibility, is set up for a third summer with the Cotuit Kettleers.
Â
Walsh is joined in Cotuit by right-hander Max Gieg (Lynn, Mass.) and infielder Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.), who was recently named an All-ACC First Team selection. Right-hander Emmet Sheehan (Darien, Conn.), an All-ACC Second Team pick, and lefty Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) are headed to the Harwich Mariners, while righty Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) is bound for the Falmouth Commodores. Pelio spent part of the 2019 summer pitching for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team.
Â
The largest contingent of BC student-athletes is signed to the NECBL with 11 players spread around New England with play beginning June 3. The Futures Collegiate Baseball League opened on May 26. Four Eagles will spend their summer in the Futures League, including Patrick Roche (Milton, Mass.), who started opening day at shortstop and batting third for the Brockton Rox on Wednesday.
Â
The Appalachian League, a former MLB affiliated rookie league, transitioned to a collegiate summer league under the oversight of USA Baseball and Major League Baseball for 2021. Lefty Charlie Coon (Duxbury, Mass.) and outfielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) will be the two BC representatives in the new league.
