COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Current Boston College women's hockey players Cayla Barnes, Kelly Browne and Hannah Bilka along with alums Kali Flanagan '19, Megan Keller '19 and Alex Carpenter '16 will attend the 2021 U.S. National Team Selection camp, which will be held June 1-6 in Blaine, Minn. USA Hockey will use the camp to assist in selecting the 28 players who will train together as part of a residency program anticipated to commence in October in Blaine as part of preparations for the 2022 Olympic Winter games.
The 40-player roster is comprised of 24 forwards, 12 defenders and four goaltenders. Boston College's six invitees mark the most of a Hockey East school while Barnes, Bilka and Browne are three of the 19 current collegiate players selected for the camp.
Barnes, Keller and Flanagan were members of the gold-medal winning squad at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang while Carpenter was a member of the silver-medal squad at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Barnes, Keller and Carpenter were most recently named to the U.S. National Team roster for the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championships that were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All six players attended the U.S. Women's National Team Evaluation Camp in October and March.
Barnes, a Second Team All-American and Hockey East First Team All-Star selection in 2020-21, finished her third season at BC with 10 points on four goals and six assists while blocking a team-leading 36 shots. The captain scored two game-winning goals for the Eagles and picked up two power play points while finishing with a plus-9 rating. The Eastvale, Calif. native also had 59 shots on goal to rank eighth nationally among blue liners.
Bilka was a Hockey East Third Team All-Star in 2020-21. The sophomore forward finished third on the team in scoring with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists and tied for second in the nation with two short-handed goals. The 2020 National Rookie of the Year led the team with 77 shots on goal this season, firing at least one shot on goal in all 19 games and recording multiple shots on goal in 17 games.
A Hockey East First Team All-Star and team captain, Browne tied for the team lead in scoring this season with 21 points off of seven goals and 14 assists. The junior led the team and finished seventh in the nation with 250 face-off wins and also had a .598 winning percentage at the dot, third-best in the nation among players taking at least 400 draws.
This year, Carpenter has been playing for the KRS Vanke Rays in the WHL while Keller and Flanagan have been skating for the PWHPA.
USA Hockey expects to announce the players chosen for residency in late June and from that pool of players, 25 will be chosen to represent the U.S. at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship, scheduled for August 20-31 in Canada.
