May 14, 2021 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Eight former Boston College men's hockey players begin their quest for the Stanley Cup this weekend when the 2021 NHL Playoffs open across the league.
Â
A pair of playoff series will feature a total of six former Eagles on both sides of the matchup. Zach Sanford and Steve Santini of the St. Louis Blues take on Alex Newhook of the Presidents' Trophy winning Colorado Avalanche in the West Division, while the Pittsburgh Penguins' Brian Dumoulin and Mike Matheson face Oliver Wahlstrom and the New York Islanders in the East.
Â
Alex Tuch's Vegas Golden Knights will play the Minnesota Wild in the West first round and rookie netminder Spencer Knight's Florida Panthers square off against the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the Central.
Â
19 former Eagles appeared in the National Hockey League during the 2020-21 regular season, which led Hockey East and was tied for third in all of Division I. Three Eagles (Newhook, Knight and Mike Hardman) appeared in both the NCAA and NHL this past season.
Â
Over the last decade, the Eagles lead the nation in cumulative alumni who have reached the NHL level. Boston College ranks second in NCAA history with 20 names on the Stanley Cup, and a former Eagle has hoisted Lord Stanley in four of the last five seasons.
