Eagles begin eight-game homestand with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College baseball team begins an eight-game homestand at the Harrington Athletics Village when it welcomes Rhode Island on Wednesday. The Eagles and the Rams take the field for a 3 p.m. contest on ACC Network.
About the Eagles...
Following a win at No. 18 Florida State, Boston College enters the week at 15-18 overall. Junior center fielder Sal Frelick leads the Eagles with a .358 average and 35 runs scored. Graduate shortstop Brian Dempsey collected eight hits over the weekend to lift his average to .298. In his career, Dempsey has 216 hits, 99 RBI and 97 runs. Junior right-hander Mason Pelio makes the midweek start after missing the FSU series. He is 3-4 with a 6.70 earned run average.
Scouting the Rams...
Rhode Island is coming off a week-long Covid-19 pause with five games cancelled. The Rams are 13-15-1 overall and last played on April 11 in a 7-3 loss to La Salle. Center fielder Austin White leads URI with a .310 average to go with a .406 on-base percentage. First baseman Xavier Vargas has clubbed four home runs and driven in 22 RBI.
Last Time They Met...
In the earliest home game in BC history, the Eagles overcame and early, three-run deficit to defeat the Rams, 6-4, on March 3. Sal Frelick finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Dante Baldelli doubled twice. Freshman RHP Joey Ryan tossed two-scoreless innings in the second and third to earn his second win of the season. Lefty Joey Walsh earned his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

The Eagles hold a 21-14 advantage in the series with the Rams. BC is 11-10 at home after this season's first meeting. Jack Cunningham and Brian Dempsey are racing to become the 12th and 13th players on record in program history to record 100 career runs scored and runs batted in. Cunningham sits at 93 runs and 100 RBI, while Dempsey is at 97 and 98. The last Eagle to reach 100 in each category was Anthony Melchionda (2009-12). With 214 career hits, Dempsey is on pace to become just the eighth player in program history with 100 runs, 100 RBI and 200 hits.
