Pelio, Eagles Win Series Opener at Va. Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Boston College baseball team led wire-to-wire in a series-opening 7-3 victory over No. 13 Virginia Tech at English Field on Thursday afternoon. The win snapped a four-game slide for the Eagles, who improved to 13-11 overall and 4-9 in the ACC, while the Hokies dropped to 13-9 and 9-7.
BC jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a run in the first, three in the second and two in the third. Staked to the early lead, junior right-handed pitcher Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) turned in his longest outing of the season at 6.2 innings. Pelio (3-3) allowed three runs on eight hits, including two solo home runs, and two walks with five strikeouts.
Lefty starter Peyton Alford (1-2) struck out five in just two innings of work, but walked six and allowed four hits, yielding six runs. Out of the bullpen, lefty Ryan Okuda supplied Virginia Tech with 6.2 innings of one-run relief with nine strikeouts to one walk, which occurred over 100 pitches into his outing.
The BC lineup was led by a 3-for-4 day out of the nine-hole by graduate right fielder Dante Baldelli (Cumberland, R.I.). Junior catcher Peter Burns (Reading, Mass.), who went 2-for-5 and threw out two runners, added a home run, his second of the season, and sophomore designated hitter Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.) notched his 10th multi-RBI game of the season.
Graduate lefty Joey Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.) finished the game for the Eagles with 2.1 innings of scoreless-relief. He allowed three hits and two walks, but struck out three; stranding five runners on base.
