March 28, 2021 | Men's Hockey
ALBANY, N.Y. – No. 2 seed St. Cloud State used a three-goal second period to beat top-seeded Boston College 4-1 in the NCAA Northeast Regional Final on Sunday night at the Times Union Center.
The Eagles finish their season with a record of 17-6-1, suffering just their second regulation loss since the middle of December. St. Cloud (19-10-0) advances to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, denying BC its 26th trip in school history.
Matt Boldy netted his 11th goal of the season late in the first period from linemates Alex Newhook and Mike Hardman, but the Huskies responded with the final four goals of the game.
Newhook finished the year on a seven-game point streak, while Boldy was named to the All-Tournament team and posted a team-leading 31 points as a sophomore.
Spencer Knight made 32 saves and closed his sophomore campaign with a 16-4-1 record in net. His counterpart David Hrenak stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced at the other end.
SCSU out-shot BC 36-27 on the night, blocking 16 Eagle shots. The teams combined to go 0-for-3 on the power play.
SCORING SUMMARY
1st 14:23, BC (1-0) | Hardman and Newhook combined to win a puck battle along the right wing half boards and Boldy skated into the low slot before sneaking a shot through the five hole of Hrenak.
2nd 9:21, SCSU (1-1) | Zach Okabe skated the puck up the wall to the left point and fluttered a shot that was kicked out by Knight's left pad, but Luke Jaycox buried the rebound from the weak side.
2nd 15:15, SCSU (1-2) | With heavy traffic in front of Knight, Will Hammer located a loose puck at the edge of the crease and whacked a shot into the upper left corner.
2nd 19:15, SCSU (1-3) | Nolan Walker drove to the net through the right wing circle and snuck a shot under a poke check attempt from Knight inside the near post. The play was initially ruled a goaltender interference penalty against Walker, but the goal was awarded following a video review.
3rd 19:16, SCSU (1-4) | Micah Miller won a foot race to a loose puck as it trickled into the Boston College zone and his empty-netter sealed the win for St. Cloud.
