No. 1 Eagles Suffer Double Overtime Heartbreaker in Semifinal to UMass Lowell
March 17, 2021 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Matt Brown batted a puck out of the air inside the left post with eight minutes left in double overtime, lifting No. 7 seed UMass Lowell past top seed Boston College by a 6-5 final in the Hockey East Semifinal on Wednesday night at Kelley Rink.
Â
The Eagles thought they had won the game in the first overtime when Patrick Giles deflected a right point shot from Jack St. Ivany, but the potential game-winner was overturned after video review revealed that BC was offside prior to the goal.
Â
Boston College will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 17-5-1 record heading into the Selection Show on Sunday night. UMass Lowell improved to 10-8-1 and will visit No. 3 seed UMass on Saturday for the Hockey East Championship Game.

The Eagles were led by their sophomore class, which combined for 12 points on the night. The top line of Alex Newhook (2-3-5), Matt Boldy (0-4-4) and Mike Hardman (1-1-2) all had multi-point performances, while Marshall Warren netted his third goal of the year.
Â
The River Hawks stormed back from 4-1 down in the third period, but captain Marc McLaughlin restored the lead at 5-4 on the power play with 2:07 remaining in regulation. Lowell answered 40 seconds later on a deflected point shot just as goaltender Henry Welsch reached the bench for an extra skater.
Â
Spencer Knight made a season-high 43 saves but suffered just his third defeat of the season. BC was 5-for-6 on the penalty kill and blocked 19 shots.
