March 11, 2021 | Women's Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five current Boston College women's hockey players along with three alumnae have been invited to the U.S. Women's National Team Evaluation Camp, which takes place at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. The 46-player roster was announced Thursday by USA Hockey.
Current Eagles Cayla Barnes, Hannah Bilka, Kelly Browne, Hadley Hartmetz and Savannah Norcross will join Alex Carpenter '16, Kali Flanagan '19 and Megan Keller '19 at the camp. Additionally, associate head coach Courtney Kennedy will serve as a coach at the camp.
Of the 46 athletes invited to the camp, 24 are active NCAA players while BC leads Hockey East with its five invitees. The camp will be used as part of the selection process for the roster that will represent the U.S. at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship, which is set to take place May 6-16 in Nova Scotia.
Barnes, Bilka, Browne, Hartmetz, Flanagan and Keller attended the most recent evaluation camp which was held in October. Barnes, Keller and Flanagan were members of the U.S. squad that claimed gold at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, while Barnes, Carpenter and Keller were part of the U.S. squad that won a fifth-consecutive gold medal at the 2019 IIHF World Championships – the last time the tournament was held. Browne, Barnes, Keller and Flanagan were members of the 2019-21 Rivalry Series roster, with Browne making her senior national team debut in the series against Canada. Barnes, Carpenter, Keller and Emily Matheson '15 were named to the roster for last year's world championships before they were canceled.
This year, Carpenter has been playing for the KRS Vanke Rays in the WHL while Keller and Flanagan have been skating for the PWHPA.
Browne, a captain for BC, has put up 10 points on seven goals and 20 assists while Norcross has a team-high 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points. That times them for 15th in the nation while Browne has 234 face-off wins to rank ninth in the country and her .595 winning percentage is third overall among players that have taken at least 375 draws. Bilka, meanwhile, has put up 15 points on seven goals and eight assists, including two short-handed goals and one power-play goal. Hartmetz is tied for sixth nationally among defenders in scoring with 14 points on one goal and 13 helpers, with her assists sitting third in the nation among defenders. Additionally, she has been on the ice for 30 even-strength goals, which ranks eighth nationally among all players and fourth for defenders. Barnes, a captain, has a team-leading 33 blocked shots while putting up 10 points on four goals and six assists. She also has two game-winning goals and two power-play points.
