February 28, 2021 | Women's Tennis
WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Boston College had a strong rebound performance on Sunday morning, beating Virginia Tech 5-2 in convincing fashion in ACC play at the Weymouth Club.
The Eagles improved to 3-3 (2-3 ACC), while the Hokies fell to 2-6 (0-3 ACC).
"I thought our captains (Kylie Wilcox, Yufei Long, Natasha Irani) really had the team very excited to play today," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "We played with a lot of energy. We did a good job of rebounding after a tough loss on Friday and played much better today. Every win in this conference is precious, every team is so strong and well coached. I'm very happy for our team that we were able to play well, we have been working very hard."
The Eagles began the match by grinding out the doubles point, with the 25th-ranked tandem of Yufei Long and Kylie Wilcox winning the point-deciding match 6-4. Laura Lopez and Marice Aguiar won their second doubles match with ease by a 6-1 final score.
BC proceeded to win three singles matches in straight sets to earn the win. After winning the first set 6-1, Natasha Irani defeated Rita Pinto following a retirement down 3-0 in the second set. Aguiar coasted past Nina Sorkin 6-4, 6-2 in fourth singles, and Long clinched the match in No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4 over Tamara Barad Itzhaki.
Lopez took her No. 5 singles match the distance, as she defeated Elizabet Danailova 10-8 in the third set superbreaker for the team's fifth and final point.
Boston College looks to move above .500 as it hosts Boston University next Saturday (March 6) at the Connell Recreation Center at 10 a.m.
