Eagles Help ACC's Cause in "Challenge" Victory over Penn State

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team never trailed in a convincing 86-69 victory over Penn State on Thursday evening in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Boston College is now 6-1 on the season and increased its win streak to four games. The Eagles have now won their last six home matchups dating back to last season. Penn State falls to 4-4 on the year.
Cameron Swartz scored 19 of her game and season-high 29 points in the second half. The senior shot 11-of-24 from the field and added four rebounds. Jaelyn Batts put forth a stellar overall performance, where she put up career numbers across the board. The junior turned in a personal-high 16 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists while recording her first double-double. Batts made seven of her eight baskets in the process.
Marnelle Garraud  rounded out the leading scorers with 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting with four 3-pointers. The trio scored 61 points on 23 made baskets, including 40  points in the second half. Ally VanTimmeren chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.Â
PSU didn't get any closer than five in the second half after the Eagles fired in 29 points in the third period and shot 52.9 percent in the frame. BC turned a 40-35 lead into 18 points going into the final period thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Garraud in the last minute of the quarter.Â
BC cruised the rest of the way in the fourth while growing the lead to 23 following five straight points from Swartz and Batts. The Eagles helped the ACC improve its record in the Challenge to 10-1-3 after Thursday night
Penn State tied up the game once in the opening frame before BC scored eight of the final 10 points to go into the second with a 20-14 edge. The Nittany Lions climbed back to cut the gap to one possession before the half, but Garraud hit a timely trey to give the hosts a 37-32 halftime lead. Â
The Eagles hit 14 of their 16 free throws compared to just four for the visitors. BC also turned 21 turnovers into 21 points and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points.Â
BC will hit the road for a Sunday 1 p.m. contest against VCU in Richmond, Va.Â
