Eagles Edged in ACC Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 76-73 setback to No. 20/25 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
BC is 7-3 and 0-1 to start ACC play, while the Tar Heels are 10-0 and 1-0 in the league.Â
Senior guards Marnelle Garraud and Cameron Swartz led the offense with a pair of 20-poutings, combining for 40 points on 15-of-24 shooting from the field. Garraud scored a season high in points on top of a team-best six assists, five rebounds, and a pair of steals.Â
It was the second straight game and the third in the last four contests that Swartz reached the 20-point mark, and tied a season-best with five rebounds. Maria Gakdeng reached double figures for the third time this season after chipping in with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting and corralled a game-best seven rebounds.Â
BC led for most of the contest, highlighted by a 15-point lead late in the fourth period after going on a 10-0 surge that began late in the third. Kaylah Ivey's layup started a stretch of four straight field goals, coupled with the defense forcing the Tar Heels to miss eight straight shots in a 4:06 span.Â
The game came down to the final moments after UNC came back to take a 76-73 lead with eight seconds left in the game. BC had a clean look to send the game to overtime coming out of a timeout but fell short. The Tar Heels ended the contest on a 12-2 run over the final 2:51, including the final 10 points to squeak out the win.Â
BC's slow start on offense led to an early 9-3 advantage for the visitors before slicing the deficit to one, 17-16, going into the second period.Â
Garraud took over in the second period with 10 points, highlighted by a personal 8-0 run that put the Eagles in front for the rest of the first half. BC went into the break with a 41-33 lead.Â
The Eagles held one of the top offenses in the country to 39.3 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range. BC also shot 50 percent from the field and 43.8 from deep.Â
However, UNC scored 27 points (14 in the fourth) off 27 turnovers and held a 25-10 advantage at the free-throw line.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the final non-conference game against Sacred Heart at Conte Forum.Â
