Boston College Football Holds Annual Senior Banquet

Zion Johnson presented the Scanlan Award
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Graduate offensive lineman Zion Johnson was presented with the Scanlan Award at the annual senior awards banquet Sunday afternoon inside Gasson Hall. Johnson received Boston College's highest football honor given to the senior who best embodies the ideals of Tom Scanlan, class of 1920.

A courageous and inspiring fullback who played both offense and defense for the Eagle teams of 1916, 1917, and 1919, forgoing the 1918 season for military service in World War I, Thomas F. Scanlan was a popular student-athlete and beloved alumnus, who was elected Varsity Club President for five consecutive years (1942-1946). He was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.

Johnson was named to the Walter Camp All-America team on Thursday night. The Bowie, Md., native has been named to five All-America teams so far in 2021. He earned All-ACC accolades for the third time in his career and the first time he secured a spot on the All-ACC first team. The Maryland native allowed zero pressures in 2021 according to ESPN's advanced stats and just one sack in 2,288 career snaps at BC.

Graduate student defensive end Brandon Barlow was presented with the Russ Joyner Award for the most outstanding defensive lineman. A key starter in 2021, Barlow was a constant contributor in 50 games for his career with 123 career tackles and six sacks. This season, Barlow was among the team leaders with 43 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Graduate student John Tessitore received the Gridiron Club Award as the student-athlete who displays the determination, enthusiasm, and spirit expected from a Boston College football player. Tessitore started every game over the previous two seasons as the team's starting placeholder. His perfectly timed fake field goal at Clemson in 2020 led to a touchdown on the next drive of the series.
Graduate student running back Travis Levy was the recipient of the Determination Award, given to the senior who works hard on and off the field to achieve their goals and maximize their abilities. Levy has played in 60 games over his standout career in Chestnut Hill, including being named a team captain in 2020.

Graduate student punter Grant Carlson was the recipient of the Special Teams Award. The award is to recognize outstanding play on special teams. Carlson was a three-year starter at punter for the Eagles and put up the best numbers of his career this season. He finished the 2021 regular season averaging 44.2 yards per punt, including a long of 72 yards.

Graduate student linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley was given the Frank Chamberlin Outstanding Linebacker Award. The award is given to the linebacker who exemplifies the qualities of Frank Chamberlin, former all-conference linebacker; a player who not only performs at a high level during the season but steps up in major moments to lead his team on and off the field. Graham-Mobley was one of the team's top defenders in 2021, ranking fifth on the team in tackles with 52. He was among the team leaders despite playing in only nine games due to injury.

Graduate student quarterback Dennis Grosel was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award, given to the player for his unheralded achievement and outstanding performance recognized by his coaches and teammates. A starter in 14 games under center at the Heights, Grosel tied Doug Flutie's school record of 520 yards passing in a game last season at Virginia. This season, his overtime touchdown pass to Zay Flowers against Missouri proved to be the game-winner.

The first-year award was given to Petrula in recognition of his school-record 60 consecutive starts on the offensive line for the Eagles. Petrula started at center, guard and tackle during his career. He was named All-ACC in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Graduate student offensive lineman Alec Lindstrom was the recipient of the Coaches' Award, given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game. A Second-Team All-American, Lindstrom repeated as the ACC's top center for the second straight season, becoming the first BC center to be named to the All-ACC first team twice. Lindstrom has the No. 3 pass blocking grade in the country at center (84.6) according to Pro Football Focus and allowed just one sack and two quarterback hits in 2021. He is rated the No. 5 center for the 2022 NFL Draft by ESPN's Todd McShay.

Lindstrom also became the first player in BC history to be named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, an award given annually to the nation's top center.
