Maine Secures Extra Point in Shootout Against No. 19 Eagles
November 19, 2021 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Donovan Houle scored five-hole in the third round of a shootout to give Maine an extra Hockey East point following a 2-2 deadlock with 19th-ranked Boston College on Friday night at Kelley Rink to close a two-game series.
Â
The Eagles pushed their record to 7-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in Hockey East play with a four-point showing against the Black Bears (1-9-2, 1-6-1 HEA).
Â
Senior assistant captain Patrick Giles had a goal and an assist while posting a game-high and career-high eight shots on goal. Classmate Jack St. Ivany had the other BC goal in regulation for his 13th point to lead all Hockey East defensemen.
Â
The Eagles opened the scoring just 1:20 into the night as Giles and Marc McLaughlin dug a puck out from behind the net and the latter fed St. Ivany for a glove side one-timer in front.
Â
Colby Ambrosio and Sam Sternschein both hit pipes later in the first period and BC carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Â
Lynden Breen tied the game for the Black Bears with 8:15 left in the second, firing a low shot blocker side from the right circle through a partial screen.
Â
Following a scoreless second period, Houle handed Maine its first lead of the series at 3:41 of the third with a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Eric Dop (29 saves) high short side.
Â
The Eagles had an answer at the 11:39 mark when Eamon Powell sent a stretch pass to Giles, who quickly released a shot high glove side on a partial breakaway from the slot. Rookie Aidan Hreschuk collected the secondary assist on the game-tying goal.
Â
Both teams generated quality scoring chances during 3-on-3 overtime, but Dop and Victor Ostman were equal to the challenge.
Â
The Black Bears won the shootout on goals from Brad Morrissey and Houle in rounds one and three. Powell was the lone Eagle to convert his attempt to open the shootout.
Â
Boston College will visit No. 14 Notre Dame next Friday at 5 p.m. in South Bend, Indiana.
