Soule Scores 25 in Setback at Boston University
November 17, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BOSTON - The Boston College women's basketball team suffered a 69-65 defeat to Boston University on Wednesday evening at Cage Gym.Â
The Eagles fall to 2-1 on the season while BU improves to 2-1.Â
Taylor Soule poured in 21 of her season and team-high 25 points in the second half. The senior shot 11-of-17 from the floor and added five rebounds. Marnelle Garraud tied a career high with six steals on top of nine points and five boards.Â
It was a tightly-contested battle that saw eight ties and 18 lead changes between the two foes. Dontavia Waggoner's second-chance basket started a 6-0 spurt that sliced the gap to 43-42 at the end of the third quarter. Makayla Dickens and Soule capped off the spurt with back-to-back layups that gave the Eagles a strong start in the fourth and a 46-43 edge.
Just when it looked like the momentum swung in the Eagles' favor, BU reclaimed the lead later in the period thanks to a 7-0 run and a 3:39 scoring drought by the BC offense. The Terriers took their largest lead of the game, 59-51, with 3:59 left in the contest. Â
The Eagles cut the deficit down to one possession on multiple occasions. Dickens drained a trifecta to slice the lead to two points with 10 seconds left, but the Terriers pulled out the win hitting two at the line to seal the game.Â
Both teams struggled on offense in a low-scoring first half, shooting under 30 percent from the floor. After the Terriers scored first in the contest, the Eagles put together an 11-0 surge before BU climbed back into the game to make it a one-score affair going into the second frame.Â
The Eagles scored the final seven points of the first half after trailing 24-17 to go into the break tied up at 24-apiece.Â
Sydney Johnson led the charge by scoring a game-high 26 points, while Maggie Pina tallied 13 for BU. The duo combined for 39 points on 13-of-26 shooting.Â
BC will look to rebound on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a road affair against Providence.Â
