Mets Sign Local Product and BC Outfielder Joe Suozzi

Former walk-on signs first professional contract with hometown team.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College outfielder Joe Suozzi (Glen Cove, N.Y.) signed a professional contract with the New York Mets as an undrafted free agent on Monday night. Suozzi, who grew up just 20 miles from Citi Field, graduated from BC in May with a degree in economics from the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences.
This year's Major League Baseball Draft was shortened from 40 rounds to just five following the suspension of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite his shortened senior season, which lasted just 15 games, Suozzi was rated as the No. 65 college outfield prospect by D1Baseball.com.
As a senior, Suozzi was elected a co-captain and slashed .414/.471/.638, while starting all 15 games. He drove in a team-leading 16 runs and scored 14. His career-best hit-streak reached 14 games, which is tied for the sixth longest in BC history.
Suozzi arrived on the Heights as an unrecruited freshman with no scholarship offers and without a spot on the BC baseball team. Following a summer as a lifeguard and playing slow-pitch softball on Long Island, he made the BC team through a walk-on tryout in the fall of 2017. Suozzi moved into the starting lineup midway through his 2018 sophomore season and became a staple in the Eagles' lineup as a junior, when he hit .282 and slugged .423 with a .363 on-base percentage. He capped off the 2019 season by earning a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team.
