March 18, 2020 | Men's Hockey
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Five Eagles were named to the annual Hockey East All-Star Teams on Wednesday as the league released its First, Second and Third Teams for the 2019-20 season. Spencer Knight, Ben Finkelstein and Alex Newhook made the Second Team, while David Cotton and Jesper Mattila received Third Team honors.
Knight ranked third in Hockey East in both goals against average (1.97) and save percentage (.931) during his first collegiate season. He became just the fourth goaltender in program history to record five shutouts in a single season, which was tied for third overall in the nation.
Finkelstein finished second in the country in plus-minus with a plus-29 rating on an elite defense pair with Mattila. He skated in all 34 games on the blue line for the Eagles and was tied for eighth in Hockey East in scoring by a defenseman with 21 points on five goals and 16 assists. Â
Newhook became the first Boston College rookie since Colin White in 2016 to record 40 points in a single season and was just the 12th NCAA player age 19 or younger to hit 40 in the last decade. The freshman forward was ninth nationally in points per game and 12th in goals per game.
Cotton established a new career-high in scoring this season with 39 points while captaining the team. He also moved past Ed Rauseo '84 into the top-50 all-time scorers in program history with 127 points. Cotton collected his 100th career point and 50th career goal this past season as a senior.Â
Mattila led the country in plus-minus at plus-30 during his senior campaign. The Finnish defenseman had nine points on two goals and seven assists and finished his career with 40 points in 142 games. Mattila posted seven points in BC's nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) to close the season.
