Biele and Gutstein Continue to Lead Eagles at Bates Carnival
February 10, 2020 | Skiing
NEWRY, Maine – The Boston College alpine ski team battled through tough elements and course sets to a successful weekend of racing at the Bates Carnival at Sunday River.
A storm that brought rain, frozen rain, sleet, wet heavy snow, and fine powder forced race organizers to switch the opening event on Friday from giant slalom to slalom.
Â
Sophomore Trent Gutstein once again led the way for the BC men and made the flip for the second run. He laid down the 10th-fastest time of the day and moved up to finish 18th overall for his third straight top-20. Co-captain Chris Bertram fought through the ruts and weather and moved up from 40th to finish 24th.
Â
"Chris and Trent had battled all week in practice against each other," said head coach Chuck Carmone. "We had a great week of training. They both work incredibly hard at practice and really pride themselves by finishing every run. That tough mentality pays off in races because the level of skiing at these carnivals is so demanding."
Â
The next day was once again the Parker Biele show. Biele blazed down the giant slalom course for sixth place and held onto that spot in the second run. It was the junior's second top-10 EISA finish of the season in the GS. Teammate Sophia Staudenmayer also got into the scoring and finished 29th among college racers and gained valuable points.
Â
"Parker is skiing with so much confidence now," added Carmone. "She's put herself in a terrific position to get into the NCAA Championships in Montana. I think her confidence is flowing over into her teammates who are all skiing stronger and moving up the ranks. It's exciting to watch."
BC travels to Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Massachusetts later this week for the Williams Carnival on Feb. 14-15.
