Staudenmayer Scores in Both Races at Williams Carnival
February 17, 2020 | Skiing
HANCOCK, Mass. – The Boston College alpine ski team stayed in its home state for the first time this season as the Eagles traveled to Jiminy Peak at the Williams Carnival over the weekend. Heavy wet snow followed by an arctic blast made for ideal race conditions as BC competed in the penultimate EISA event.
Women's co-captain Parker Biele took an inspiring 10th in the first run and finished 12th overall down the slick giant slalom track. Freshman Sophia Staudenmayer scored points for the team breaking into the top-30 in the GS.
"Parker's been skiing so incredible in GS this season, breaking into the top-5, that we forget that 12th a few weeks ago would have been regarded as incredible," said head coach Chuck Carmone. "I was equally impressed that Sophia was able to crack the top-30. She's from California and this was a great but hard surface. She's only been racing out here a few months and has adjusted quickly to our eastern conditions. She and our other young skiers continue to build confidence and speed."
Freshman Will Kornya led the men in the giant slalom but neither he, captain Chris Bertram or Trent Gutstein were able to move into the top-30.
In the slalom, the challenging course took out half the men's team on the first run and one more in the second run. The women had a solid day with four skiers getting to the finish line for both runs. Staudenmayer was the leader of the pack again cracking the top-30 and scoring points for BC.
"The bright spot was seeing co-captain Madeline Davis and senior Kelsie Grant put in two quality runs," said Carmone. "Both got injured at our winter camp and have been fighting to get healthy and caught up to the others. This was a positive step in the right direction."
The team will use a two-week break from EISA carnival racing for training ahead of the Middlebury Carnival in Vermont for the NCAA Regionals on Feb. 28-29.
