Women’s basketball undefeated start ends with an 86-68 loss in Atlanta
ATLANTA - The Boston College women's basketball team lost its first game of the season at Georgia Tech as the host Yellow Jackets captured an 86-68 victory on Wednesday at McCamish Pavilion.
BC (4-1, 0-1 ACC) could not overcome a hot shooting Georgia Tech (3-1, 1-0 ACC) team that hit on 61 percent of its shots in the first half.
Junior forward Taylor Soule led BC in scoring with 19 points, including her first career three-point field goal. Junior Makayla Dickens added 16 points and seven rebounds while junior Cameron Swartz had a strong showing with 14 points of her own.
Boston College found themselves in unfamiliar territory after the first 10 minutes of play as Georgia Tech sprinted out to a 27-18 lead. Wednesday's game marked the first time in five games this season that the Eagles did not hold a lead after one quarter of play. Despite the early deficit, Dickens scored eight points in the period on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
Georgia Tech added to the lead doubling up BC 24-12 in the second quarter to take a 51-30 lead into halftime. In the first half, the Yellow Jackets knocked down 7-of-14 from three-point range.
The Yellow Jackets outscored BC 23-15 in the third quarter to lead 74-45 after 30 minutes of play.
The Eagles would not go away without a fight, as they outscored Georgia Tech 23-12 in the final 10 minutes. Dickens drained two three-point field goals early in the fourth quarter, which sparked a 13-1 run.
Boston College returns to Conte Forum on Sunday at 2 p.m. versus No. 3 NC State on ACC Network.
Game Notes:
Coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee post-game:
"We came out pretty sleepy and looked like we weren't ready to play and not the intensity that we needed, which allowed them to get hot. They shot the ball really well from the three-point line, which of course we weren't expecting.
In the fourth quarter, I think you saw the team that we are and the team that we're going to need to be consistently to win ACC games. Hopefully we can build off that fourth quarter and come back in the next game and look a little bit sharper."
