Gutstein Shines on Home Hill at UVM Carnival
January 28, 2020 | Skiing
STOWE, Vt. – Sophomore Trent Gutstein led the Eagles and finished 15th overall as the men's alpine team placed ninth in the slalom on Gutstein's home hill at Stowe Mountain Resort over the weekend.
The Stowe native's second run in the slalom was the sixth-fastest overall at the annual UVM Carnival. Men's junior captain Chris Bertram finished 21st among college racers in the slalom.
"I was pleased with the overall effort and improvement of the team. We haven't had a lot of opportunities to practice on a hill like Stowe that has a long, steep, and firm track," said head coach Chuck Carmone. "Trent's sixth place in the second run put out notice to the league that we have some terrific racers on this team. We have others on the team that can keep pace with him and seeing him do it against teams like Vermont, Dartmouth and Middlebury makes everyone gain more confidence."
Â
Women's co-captain Parker Biele led the way with a 32nd place finish in the slalom and right behind her was Sophia Staudenmayer who took 34th place.
Â
In the giant slalom on Friday, the Eagles had a number of skiers with solid runs, including Gutstein (32), Spencer Wright (40), Will Kornya (42), and Bertram (43). The women had a strong day turned in by Staudenmayer (40), co-captain Madeline Davis (49) and Gigi Kranjc (50).
"We have a young team that is gaining invaluable experience each week and I'm really looking forward to seeing us compete at Sugarloaf at the Colby Carnival this weekend," added Carmone.
The Colby Carnival will take place this Friday (Jan. 31) and Saturday (Feb. 1) in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.
