Biele Earns Historic EISA Finish at Harvard Carnival
January 20, 2020 | Skiing
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – Junior co-captain Parker Biele had a historic performance at the inaugural Harvard Carnival over the weekend at Waterville Valley, earning the highest finish for a BC female skier since Jessica Hult took sixth in the slalom at the 1995 EISA Championships.
Biele was 13th after her first run in the women's giant slalom on Saturday before eventually placing 14th overall for her fourth career top-20 GS finish.Â
Â
"It's no surprise to anyone our team who has been watching Parker," said head coach Chuck Carmone. "She is focused like a laser right now on her goals of qualifying for the NCAA Championships and I have no doubt she'll keep improving and moving up in the standings. She leads every day by example of the effort and dedication it takes to be among the best."
Fourteen inches of new snow, high winds, and temperatures well below zero forced race organizers to move the slalom race to Friday and the giant slalom to Saturday.
Â
The harsh conditions didn't faze sophomore Trent Gutstein, who broke into a scoring position and earned 29th in the men's slalom. Freshman Will Kornya made his college debut finishing 39th and junior captain Chris Bertram took 47th. In the women's slalom, the Eagles struggled to find the finish line while pushing down the famous World Cup race trail.
Â
On the second day, Bertram (44th) and Gutstein (52nd) once again made the cut after the first giant slalom run and each moved up in their second run.
"It was a good, albeit tough, first weekend," added Carmone. "We saw some great results from our more experienced skiers and our younger skiers now have a carnival weekend of experience under their belts and will do much better in our future races. Much of the team is skiing well and just needs a little more consistency to put in two solid runs. There's a lot of speed here and when we get rolling we are going to get noticed as a program on the move by the league."
Â
Biele is currently ranked 21st overall in the Nor-Am Cup giant slalom standings after finishing 16th in both races. The Nor-Am Cup features the top American and Canadian skiers across North America.
The Eagles return to action next weekend in Stowe, Vermont at the annual UVM Carnival on Jan. 24-25.Â
