Eagles Open Spring Season at Charlotte on Friday Night

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's tennis team begins the 2020 spring season on Friday (Jan. 17) with a 5 p.m. road match against UNC Charlotte at Lifetime Fitness in South Charlotte.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
• Charlotte is 1-1 thus far in the spring, beating Presbyterian 5-2 before falling 6-1 to No. 16 South Carolina
• Henry Lieberman recorded his first career top-40 upset with his three-set victory over South Carolina's No. 39 Raphael Lambling last Sunday
• The 49ers finished last season with a 10-15 record and fell to Rice in the Conference USA Championships
• Kyle Bailey is in his first season as the head coach at Charlotte after spending the last three seasons as associate head coach at South Carolina
SERIES HISTORY
• Friday's match between Charlotte and Boston College is the fourth meeting in the all-time series
• The 49ers are 2-1 in the previous three meetings
• Charlotte beat BC 6-1 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in the last meeting on March 10, 2016
ALL-CONFERENCE
• Derek Austin was selected to the 2019 All-ACC Men's Tennis Third Team, becoming the program's first All-ACC honoree since Akash Muppidi in 2012
• Austin posted a 12-13 singles record last season while playing in the No. 1 singles slot for the entire campaign
• He closed out his junior year by upsetting No. 96 Simon Baudry of Clemson in the first round of the ACC Championship
• Austin finished the season with a 12-11 doubles record, playing with both Sean Mullins and Conor Mullins in the No. 1 slot
SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
• Derek Austin, Peter Campana, Chris Grasel, Max Mendelsohn and Conor Mullins were all named Scholar-Athletes by the ITA last summer
• In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year and have been enrolled for at least two semesters
• Austin was also selected to the 2019 ACC Men's Tennis All-Academic Team
