
Gionta to be Inducted into U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Former Boston College All-American Brian Gionta '01, who will be inducted into the BC Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in October, was named to the Class of 2019 for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Gionta will be inducted along with Gary Bettman, Neal Henderson, Tim Thomas and Krissy Wendell.
The 2019 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Celebration will be held Dec. 12 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington D.C. Tickets are available by clicking here.
Gionta was a three-time Hobey Baker finalist (1999, 2000, 2001) and captained the Eagles to the 2001 NCAA Championship, the program's first since 1949. A native of Rochester, New York, Gionta graduated as the program's all-time leader in goals (123) and hat tricks (nine). He ranks second all-time in points (232) behind David Emma and sits eighth in assists (109).
The forward was a three-time First Team All-American and was named the Hockey East Player of the Year in 2001 and the Rookie of the Year in 1998. A Walter Brown Award winner in 2001, Gionta was honored as BC's Eagle of the Year as a senior after leading Boston College to four straight Frozen Four appearances.
Selected in the third round of the 1998 NHL Draft by New Jersey, Gionta won the 2003 Stanley Cup with the Devils. He played from 2001-18 and became only the 43rd American to skate in 1,000 career NHL games. Gionta also ranks 43rd among American-born skaters all-time in points with 595 on 291 goals and 304 assists.
He was a member of the U.S. Olympic team in 2006 and 2018, serving as team captain in PyeongChang, South Korea. Gionta is currently working in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres.
