
Balido Leads Eagles to Sweep of Thunderbirds

Senior Cat Balido tallied 12 kills with a .550 hitting percentage to lead the volleyball team to a three-set win over Southern Utah
BOCA RATON, Fla. –The Boston College volleyball team earned their second sweep of the weekend, taking down Southern Utah in three sets on Saturday morning. The Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season after posting a 2-1 record at the Owls Classic and have won five of their last six matches. Sophomore Jewel Strawberry and junior Amaka Chukwujekwu earned All-Tournament honors following Saturday's match.

Senior Cat Balido tallied a team-best 12 kills against the Thunderbirds, only committing one error on 20 attempts for a .550 clip. Chukwujekwu hit at a .700, earning eight kills off of 10 attempts with only one error. Senior Jane DeJarld put up a team-best 18 assists while junior Madison McKnight followed closely behind with 17.

Chukwujekwu led the defensive effort, recording the only block solo for the Eagles and assisting on seven others. Strawberry led in digs, tallying 11 in addition to her seven kills on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –BC put up a quick lead, jumping to a 5-1 advantage early on. The Eagles continued to build, only allowing three more Thunderbird points before marking 12 of their own. SUU never quite could catch up as the Eagles capped the opening set on a 5-1 scoring run, taking the first set 25-12.
Set 2 –This time the Thunderbirds found the early advantage, earning a two-point lead at 6-4. BC jumped on top with a four-point run, taking a 9-6 lead before the teams traded points for the remainder of the set. SUU tied the match five different times to follow, but a pair of three-point runs for the Eagles and a set error by SUU earned BC the win, 25-21.
Set 3 –The deciding set was evenly matched to open before the Eagles added five straight points to take a 12-6 lead. BC would go on to take the win, 25-18, despite the Thunderbirds earning four of the last five points of the match.
