Eagles Earn Road Win Over Princeton
September 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Sam Smith scored twice in the first half to pace BC in the 2-1 win at Princeton.
PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind two first-half goals from Sam Smith, the Boston College women's soccer team topped Princeton, 2-1, on Sunday night at Myslik Field.
The teams were scoreless through the opening 30 minutes of the game before Smith scored in the 31st and 34th minutes for a 2-0 BC lead. Princeton's Caroline Noonan found the back of the net six minutes later to cut the Tigers' deficit to one by the half. The Eagles earned a few good looks in the early goings of the second half but the score held up at 2-1. In the 73rd minute, Jade Ruiters was issued a second yellow card on the night. While BC was a player down for the remainder of the game, the Eagles held on for the road win.
Allie Augur – who was big in cutting off crosses and corners – finished with two saves for BC while Natalie Grossi had two for Princeton.
Boston College will now return home for a three-game home stand, beginning with Northeastern at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 31' | From about 30 yards out from goal, Emily Langenderfer sent a ball over the top and back into the box. As the ball bounced up in the air the near the penalty spot, Smith surged onto it and struck a left-footed shot into the net.
- 34' | Riley Lochhead drove down the left wing and then took a touch with the ball to beat the defender to the end line before sending a low cross back toward the goal for Smith to redirect to the far post.
- 40' | After Augur made the initial save on a header, a back-healed ball deflected to a free Noonan for a touch at the left post.
- Boston College is now 2-3-0 in the all-time series against Princeton with a 2-0-0 mark in regular season meetings with the Tigers.
- This marked the first time that Princeton has lost a home opener in five seasons (Sept. 5, 2014 vs. Rutgers).
- Sam Smith has now scored in three out of four contests for BC this season … in each of those contests, the freshman has scored the game-winning goal.
- Smith's brace marked the first for a BC freshman since Olivia Vaughn did it at Louisville on Sept. 25, 2016.
- Allie Augur moves to 3-0-0 on the year … the rookie finished with two saves.
- Riley Lochhead now has two assists on the season.
- Emily Langenderfer's assist marked her first point of 2019.
- This is just the second time since the 2009 season that BC has started a season with four consecutive wins (2018).
- Boston College held the 4-3 lead in shots on goal while both squads had five corner kicks … the BC back line drew Princeton into two offside whistles.
