Eagles Name Wilcox and Tsokilauri as New Captains
August 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Seniors Kylie Wilcox and Elene Tsokilauri have been named the new captains of the Boston College women's tennis team for the upcoming 2019-20 season. Head coach Nigel Bentley made the announcement on Tuesday.
"Kylie and Elene are terrific leaders on and off the court. Their commitment to our team goals will push us all, and they understand there are no short cuts," said Bentley. "Kylie and Elene have earned the respect of their teammates and they know to compete successfully in our conference it requires tremendous commitment. I am really looking forward to working with them as Captains and we are all very excited about the upcoming season."
Last season as a junior, Wilcox was named to the All-ACC Third Team. She went 20-8 overall in doubles, including a 12-3 mark in ACC play, and 14-7 with last year's captain Jackie Urbinati. The pair won seven straight matches to close the season, including three over teams ranked in the top-50. She and Urbinati finished the year ranked No. 1 in the Northeast and 51st nationally. In singles play, Wilcox upset No. 6 Sara Daavettila of UNC on Feb. 22, joining Yufei Long (same match) as the only BC players ever to beat a top-10 opponent. Her younger sister Hailey Wilcox joins the team this season as a freshman.Â
Tsokilauri went 7-14 overall last year and posted ACC victories over Virginia Tech and No. 15 Florida State at fifth singles. She had four ACC doubles victories, defeating the 24th-ranked team of Sofya Treshcheva and Sofya Golubovskaya from No. 10 Syracuse in second doubles with Dasha Possokhova. That win on the Heights marked Boston College's first-ever upset of a top-10 program in school history. Tsokilauri also collected two doubles victories over Louisville, the second of which came in the ACC Championship with Loren Haukova.
As a program, the Eagles are coming off their highest win total in the last two decades (16) and first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997.
