Eagles Open Preseason Against Colgate

NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College women's soccer team hosted Colgate in a preseason exhibition match on Monday night at the Newton Campus Fields, topping the Raiders, 1-0, behind a goal from Sam Smith. It was the first of two preseason exhibition matches for BC, with the second coming on Saturday afternoon in a neutral site matchup in Vermont against the Catamounts.

THE GOAL
After the Eagles worked the ball down the left side of the field and then towards the box, it fell to Smith about 12 yards out from goal … the freshman picked her head up took an initial shot that was blocked before cutting back towards the middle and lofting the ball over the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

OFFENSIVE NOTABLES
In the 10th minute, Olivia Vaughn's service from the flank found Smith and a blocked shot fell to Jade Ruiters but her look went high ... later the in half, a nice defensive play in the midfield sprung Vaughn down the middle of the field. The senior was able to evade the Raiders to fire a shot that ricocheted off the goaltender towards goal but a defender was able to make a goal line save … Francesca Venezia had a nice service into the box late in the first half but the Colgate goaltender had a nice punch out of the box … with under four minutes to play in the first 45, Riley Lochhead ripped a shot from the edge of the box that the goalie parried away for a BC corner … early in the second half, Smith had a nice look blocked away by a defender … Gaby Carreiro sent a ball ahead for Venezia that Kelly Chiavaro charged out to smother right as Venezia got to it.

HOLDING STRONG
Allie Augur and Maddie Murphy each played 45 minutes in goal to combine for the shutout … Augur was tested from distance with a hard shot into the upper left portion of the net but the freshman timed her jump and blocked the ball over the crossbar … Colgate's Jennifer Bartlett was sprung down the right side but Sydney Moore did a nice job to recover and force the ball back to the sideline to close out the first half … Colgate started on a breakaway 15 minutes into the second half but Lochhead tracked down Adrienne Vaughn and took the ball back … late in the half, Michela Agresti timed a slide tackle to quash an opportunity for Colgate entering the box.
