CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The end of the academic year rings in graduation season, leaving seniors to answer the age-old question of what they plan to do after college. For most student-athletes, this means a departure from their office of choice – the track, the courts, the fields, and pool – in exchange for job that allows them to support themselves in their adult life. The ACC Futures Internship Program seeks to place former student-athletes in jobs that will allow them to work with collegiate and professional sports after graduation, letting their love of the game live on.
The program selects a handful of student-athletes from teams across the ACC to place them in jobs at organizations that include FOX Sports, the ACC Championships, and the Orange Bowl Committee. Boston College's own McKenna Goss '19 is preparing to utilize this program to transition from the volleyball courts to the offices of Teamworks in Durham, N.C.
Teamworks is an athlete engagement platform that relies on its app and software to connect collegiate and professional teams. The Teamworks app totes teams and tournaments such as the Boston Red Sox, March Madness, and multiple U.S. national teams among its clients.
"Teamworks has an unbeatable company culture that promotes competition but also values collaboration," said Goss. This office culture closely resembles the competitive atmosphere that Goss has experienced as a DI athlete, as well as the nature of teamwork which has been ingrained on the court.
Goss became aware of the ACC Futures Program when the BC Student Athlete Development office alerted her to the program.
"Administrators throughout our athletic department helped me realize my own passion for student-athlete success in the ways they supported me throughout my four years. They were always available to meet, connected me to personal and professional resources, and used their own networks to assist me in career exploration."
Goss knew that when she graduated, she wanted to work within athletics. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native said that the BC Student Athlete Development office allowed her to promote her valuable skills derived from her student-athlete experience and turn them into a job that furthers her passion of sports.
"Receiving a full-time position in a company like Teamworks sometimes feels too good to be true. The office has an unbeatable company culture that promotes competition but also values collaboration. Everything they stand for aligns with my values and supports my long-term career goals of working closely with athletics organizations to promote the success of student-athletes. I'm extremely honored to be a part of their mission and can't wait to see where it takes me."Â Â
