Devlin S-AFE Program
Boston College student-athletes have a unique platform to further the University mission, "Men and Women for Others" and translate the skills they hone in their choice of sport into a positive lasting impact in the community.
Through the generosity of Michael and Matt Devlin, BC student-athletes' impact will reach an even greater audience through their establishment of the Katharine B. and Robert M. Devlin Student-Athletes for Education (S-AFE) and Leadership Development Program. The S-AFE Program honors the Devlin family's commitment to service and will enable student-athletes to develop in all facets of their collegiate experience.

A hallmark of the Devlin S-AFE Program is the annual Student-Athlete Service Immersion Trip. For the last 11 years, student-athletes along with a BC Athletics administrator have traveled to other regions in the United States to give back to the local communities.
For the first nine years of the Service Immersion program, student-athletes traveled to New Orleans to volunteer with SBP. SBP, founded by Boston College Alumna and CNN Hero of the Year, Liz McCartney, upholds their mission of shrinking the time between disaster and recovery. Student-athletes assisted with the construction of houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina to help families get home sooner.
In 2016, SBP expanded to help communities outside of Louisiana. They now operate in more than 13 locations in the United States and the Caribbean. In light of this expansion, BC traveled with SBP to Houston for the 2018 and 2019 service trips. Similarly, in New Orleans, student-athletes assisted in the construction efforts with SBP volunteers to repair homes damaged by Hurricane Harvey.
In January 2020, for the 11th Service Immersion Trip, we teamed up with the organization Soles 4 Souls (S4S). The mission of S4S is to “turn unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunity, by keeping them from going to waste and putting them to good use – providing relief, creating jobs and empowering people to break the cycle of poverty." The week prior to the start of the Spring 2020 semester, a group of student-athletes traveled to New Orleans to distribute shoes and winter jackets to local schools and Boys & Girls Clubs.
Boston College is grateful for the Devlin family for their dedication to providing our student-athletes opportunities to participate in service and further the motto of “Men and Women for Others” -- not only on the Heights but across the country.
