June 21, 2019 | Men's Hockey
VANCOUVER – A program record three incoming Boston College men's hockey players were selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft on Friday night at Rogers Arena. BC became just the fifth program in college hockey history to have three players taken in the first round of the same draft.
Forwards Matt Boldy and Alex Newhook and goaltender Spencer Knight were all selected in the top 16 picks of the opening round. Boldy was the first Eagle off the board to the Minnesota Wild with the 12th pick, followed immediately by Knight at No. 13 to the Florida Panthers. Three picks later, the Colorado Avalanche selected Newhook with the 16th overall pick.
The trio gives Boston College 21 first round picks all-time in program history. It marks the fifth time that multiple BC players have had their names called in the first round and the first time since Noah Hanifin and Colin White were taken in 2015.
Boldy ranked fourth on the U.S. Under-18 National Team last season with 81 points on 33 goals and 48 assists in 64 games. A native of Millis, Massachusetts, Boldy posted 12 points in seven games at the IIHF Under-18 World Championships to rank third in the entire tournament as Team USA won bronze.
Knight became the 10th American goaltender ever to be drafted in the first round and the first selected in the top-15 since 2010. The Darien, Connecticut native went 32-4-0 in net for the U.S. Under-18 National Team last season with a 2.36 goals against average and a .913 save percentage in nearly 2,000 minutes.
Newhook led the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) in scoring last season with 102 points while captaining the Victoria Grizzlies and won the Vern Dye Trophy as league MVP. The Newfoundland native then ranked fifth among all skaters at the Under-18 World Championships with 10 points in seven games for Canada.
