Senior lefty goes the distance in 5-1 win over top seed Louisville.
DURHAM, N.C. – The Boston College baseball team upset top-seed Louisville, 5-1, to win Pool A of the ACC Championship at Durham Bulls Athletics Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles advanced to Saturday's semifinals with a 31-26 record; having won nine of their last 11 games.
Senior left-hander Dan Metzdorf (Burlington, Mass.) dominated on the mound for eight innings. He limited the ACC's top hitting lineup to just one unearned run on two hits. Metzdorf (8-2) struck out six and walked four.
BC broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run single by senior third baseman Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J.) in the fourth. After the Cardinals (43-14) got a run in the top of the seventh, the Eagles answered with two more two-out runs in the home half. Senior designated hitter Gian Martellini (Johnston, R.I.) picked up a RBI-single to right and junior right fielder Joe Suozzi (Glen Cove, N.Y.) singled up the middle to make it 4-1.
Alu added a RBI-double off the wall in right-center in the eighth inning for a 2-for-4 game. Suozzi, who doubled and scored in the fourth, was 2-for-4 on the day. Freshman second baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) was 2-for-5 at the plate to put his two-day tournament hit total at five.

Mike Gambino, Head Coach:
"It's fun to watch [Metzdorf] pitch when he gets in a groove like that. And he came out after the eighth and looked at me and just said, 'tell those boys down there to sit down'. And we told them to sit down. That was an unbelievable outing."
"The thing I love from our lineup today was [Louisville] threw good arms with good stuff and [we had] super competitive at-bats. Even some of our two-strike at-bats that didn't end up with hits, like Galland and Cody, just guys doing such a great job and competing. And I said it yesterday but it's a fun group to be around right now."
