Metzdorf leads BC baseball as All-ACC First Team selection.
DURHAM, N.C. – Five Boston College baseball players earned All-ACC honors as voted on by the league's coaches, including All-ACC First Team senior pitcher Dan Metzdorf (Burlington, Mass.). Freshmen Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) and Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) were voted to the Second Team and senior Jake Alu (Hamilton, N.J.) made the Third Team.
Â
Frelick, Morissette and classmate Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Boston College previously had a total of 12 all-conference selections since joining the league for the 2006 season. In 2009, BC had a program-best four players represented on All-ACC teams.
Â
The Eagles' four All-ACC selections are tied for fifth most in the league with Miami and North Carolina State. BC's three All-Freshman Team picks are the most in the league. The combination of four All-ACC and three All-Freshman Team picks are tied for the most in the league at seven with Clemson, Florida State and Louisville.
Â
Metzdorf is the fourth player in program history to earn First Team honors and the first since All-American Chris Shaw in 2014. This season, the Eagles' lefty ace is 7-2 on the mound with a 2.42 earned run average, which is tied for the league-lead. Metzdorf has allowed just one run over his last three starts and has pitched six or more innings in each of his last eight starts; all in the ACC.
Â
Frelick and Morissette follow in the footsteps of teammate Chris Galland, who was the first BC player to earn All-ACC and All-Freshman Team a year ago. Prior to season-ending knee surgery, Frelick was a top-three hitter in the conference with a .367 average in the two-hole for the Eagles. His freshman campaign ended with a .513 slugging percentage on eight doubles, a triple and four home runs plus a .447 on-base percentage. Frelick also swiped 18 bags, which still ranks fourth in the league entering the postseason.
Â
Morissette's bat caught fire in the second half of ACC play; hitting .441 in the last 15 league games to move his overall average to .321 with a team-leading 38 RBI. His 20 doubles are a team-high as he doubled twice in the regular season finale to surpass 2009 All-American Tony Sanchez and tie former New York Met Eric Campbell for the seventh most in a single season in BC history.
Â
Alu bounced back from hitting .216 as a junior to hit a team-best .351 entering the ACC tournament. His 78 hits are second in the ACC and are tied with his head coach Mike Gambino (2000) and Anthony Melchionda (2010) for sixth most in a season at BC. As a sophomore, Alu hit .331 (55-for-166) and through April 24 this season had hit an identical .331 (55-for-166). He has scored a team-high 51 runs and is second with 17 doubles.
Â
Pelio has been a mainstay in the BC rotation all season with a 4-3 record and 3.82 ERA in 12 starts. In the first half of ACC play, he racked up wins over No. 8 Louisville and No. 20 Clemson to salvage the series finale and later secured the Eagles' first series win at No. 19 Florida State with a dominating seven innings of shutout ball in the rubber-match.
Â
Boston College opens this week's ACC Championship as the 12 seed against eighth-seeded Clemson Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Eagles then conclude play in Pool A on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against top-seeded Louisville. The winner of the pool moves on to Saturday's semifinal. All games will be televised on regional sports networks, including NESN+, and streamed on ACC Network Extra via WatchESPN.
