April 09, 2019 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Nine former Boston College hockey players begin their quest for the 2019 Stanley Cup when the NHL Playoffs begin on Wednesday (April 10) across the league. BC's nine playoff competitors rank third among NCAA schools behind Michigan (12) and Minnesota (10).
Six former Eagles will skate in the Western Conference playoffs, while three players compete in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Hayes (Winnipeg) and Zach Sanford (St. Louis), who missed being teammates on the Heights by one season, will oppose one another in the first round.
During the NHL regular season, Boston College men's hockey alumni ranked second among NCAA programs in goals (212), points (528), and 25-goal scorers (3 – Cam Atkinson, Johnny Gaudreau, Chris Kreider). Former Eagles also ranked fourth overall in college hockey with 1,050 NHL games played this season.
Last year, Brooks Orpik helped lead the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup title, becoming the seventh former Eagle to win multiple Cups. Orpik is one of 11 former Eagles to be part of a championship squad, and BC is now tied with Wisconsin for the most names on the Stanley Cup with 19.
A Boston College product has won the Stanley Cup in each of the last three years as Brian Dumoulin hoisted the 2016 and 2017 Cups with Pittsburgh. Orpik also won the 2009 Stanley Cup with the Penguins.
