Eagles Unable to Overcome Early Deficit
April 03, 2019 | Baseball
Baseball falls to Hartford, 7-4.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team lost to Hartford, 7-4, at the Harrington Athletics Village on Wednesday evening. The loss dropped the Eagles below .500 for the first time this season with a 14-15 record, while the Hawks moved to 9-14.
BC attempted to overcome an immediate 3-0 deficit as the first three Hartford batters of the day all collected hits against senior right-hander Jack Nelson (Sparta, N.J.). Hawks' first baseman Chris Sullivan capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run to left.
The Eagles failed to score in the first, but put up a single run in each of the next three innings to tie the game, 3-3, by the end of the fourth and get Nelson, who allowed three runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts in four innings, off the hook.
Hartford regained the lead in the fifth with back-to-back extra-base hits off of freshman RHP Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.). Shortstop Jackson Olson tripled into the right field corner to plate the go-ahead run. Mancini (2-4) took the loss in two innings of work with two runs scored on four hits, not walks and one strikeout.
After the Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth, the Eagles got a run back on a solo home run to straightaway center field by freshman designated hitter Ramon Jimenez (Chicopee, Mass.).
