The Eagles host the Tar Heels in a rematch of last year's championship game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.– The No. 1 Boston College women's lacrosse team is headed to their second consecutive ACC Championship game appearance, set for a rematch of last years' heartbreaker with North Carolina. The championship match is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Alumni Stadium and will be featured on NESNplus and the ACC Network Extra.
The Eagles secured the advancement to the championship after taking down 4-seed Syracuse, 14-13, in a rainstorm thriller Friday evening. With six minutes remaining, the Eagles found themselves down by four goals after a gritty back-and-forth fight with the Orange. The Eagles put up four unanswered goals, capped off by a Sam Apuzzo rocket to tie the game at 13-all with 1:40 remaining after causing a turnover and winning the ground ball battle. Cue Taylor Walker, who scored with 16 seconds remaining diving and rolling out of a Dempsey Arsenault feed to win the game for the Eagles. Apuzzo, Arsenault and Walker each tallied three goals in the effort.
North Carolina advanced after a 16-11 win over Duke on Saturday after lightning prevented the semifinal from taking place at the originally scheduled time. Olivia Ferrucci tallied a career-high six points in the win for the Tar Heels while Kara Klages and Jamie Ortega each added four goals to lift the reigning ACC Champions over the Blue Devils and advance to their fifth straight championship game.
During the regular season, the Eagles topped Carolina, 14-8, which would prove to be the Tar Heels' only home loss of the season. Apuzzo and Kenzie Kent combined for eight goals as the Eagles would hop out to a 5-1 lead early on and never look back.
Last year, the Tar Heels handed the Eagles their first loss of the season in the conference championship. Apuzzo led with four goals for BC but the Tar Heels took the win and the title in a 14-11 decision in Durham, N.C. A win on Sunday would secure the program's first-ever ACC Championship title and just the school's second, as the lone title belongs to the 2007 men's soccer team. Winner advances with an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
