April 27, 2019 | Baseball
Boston College swept in Saturday doubleheader.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 8-0 to No. 25 Duke at the Harrington Athletics Village. The games were played in front of 617 fans at the Eagles (22-24, 8-16 ACC) Eighth Annual ALS Awareness Game.
Â
The Blue Devils (27-17, 13-11 ACC) took advantage of three BC errors in the top of the first inning of game one; plating three runs without a hit against freshman right-hander Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.). Pelio was in control for the next five innings as he retired 13 in a row at one point and 15 of 16 batters between the second and sixth.
Â
After the Eagles got on the board with a leadoff-home run to center in the seventh by junior first baseman Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.), Duke got the run back with a bases-loaded sacrifice-fly with the run charged to Pelio after his exit.
Â
Pelio (4-3) went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs, only one earned, on just two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Â
Game two was scoreless through three frames before Duke broke through for a run in the fourth. The Blue Devils' scoring continued through the middle innings with a run coming in on a balk in the fifth before three walks loaded the bases in the sixth and all three came in to score. Duke broke the game open with three runs in the eighth. Center fielder Kennie Taylor picked up a RBI-triple in the frame for his fourth hit of the nightcap.
