April 16, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 40th-ranked and No. 11 seed Boston College women's tennis team kicks off the 2019 ACC Championship on Wednesday (April 17) with a 5 p.m. first round match against the 14th-seeded Louisville Cardinals at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina. The winner will play No. 6 seed Wake Forest on Thursday (April 18) at 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE EAGLES
Boston College (15-9, 5-9 ACC) is ranked 40th nationally in this week's ITA rankings, chasing its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997. The Eagles were tied for ninth in the final ACC standings with Syracuse and Notre Dame, but lost the three-way tiebreaker as they dropped to the 11-seed.
BC's top doubles team of Jackie Urbinati and Kylie Wilcox sits 70th in the country, while Yufei Long (No. 71) and Wilcox (No. 116) are both ranked in singles. Boston College has played five of its last six matches without Long, its No. 1 singles player for most of the season.
FIRST MEETING
Boston College defeated Louisville 5-2 on the road in ACC play back on March 31, clinching the victory in No. 6 singles with a three-set win from Dasha Possokhova at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The doubles point was extremely tight and came down to the No. 2 matchup as each team won 6-4 at No. 1 and 3. Laura Lopez and Elene Tsokilauri needed a tiebreaker to beat Raven Neely and Diana Wong 7-6 as BC took a 1-0 lead into singles.
Neely evened the score by defeating Natasha Irani in No. 3 singles, but the Eagles stormed ahead 3-1 following convincing 6-2, 6-3 victories from senior captain Jackie Urbinati and Lopez in the No. 2 and 5 slots. Aleksandra Mally cut the BC lead to 3-2 with a three-set win over Tsokilauri, but Possokhova responded by losing just four games in her final two sets against Dina Chaika as the junior sealed the match.
SCOUTING LOUISVILLE
The Cardinals enter the ACC Tournament on an 11-match losing streak with an overall record of 10-14 (2-12 ACC). Louisville dropped its final three regular season matches by 7-0 final scores on the road against Virginia, Miami and Florida State.
The Cardinals fell 4-1 to Virginia Tech in the first round of last year's ACC Championship, ending their season at 13-13 overall. During the regular season, Louisville lost 4-3 in Chestnut Hill as Asiya Dair, Wilcox, Urbinati and Tsokilauri won in singles.Â
