BC Baseball Shut Out in ACC Opener

Eagles fall to No. 8 Cardinals, 4-0.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Boston College baseball team was shut out by No. 8 Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium on Friday night in its ACC opener. The Eagles dropped to 7-5 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 10-3.

Leadoff-walks issued to Louisville in the first and sixth innings were the difference early. The Cardinals got to BC senior lefty Dan Metzdorf (Burlington, Mass.) with a seeing-eye single through the left side with two away off the bat of right fielder Danny Oriente to plate leadoff batter and second baseman Lucas Dunn.

Metzdorf, who last pitched at Jackson State (2/15) on opening day, went 4.2 innings with 83 pitches. He settled in after the first and retired 11 in a row after a leadoff-walk in the second. A pair of two outs walks ended Metzdorf's (1-1) night in the fifth as his line closed with one run on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Lefty Reid Detmers (3-0) pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball with three hits and 13 strikeouts. Detmers did not issue a walk and retired 18 in a row between a single by junior Brian Dempsey (Potomac, Md.) in the first and a single by junior first baseman Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.) in the seventh.

Senior RHP Thomas Lane (Georgetown, Mass.), who stranded two inherited runners in the fifth, allowed a leadoff-walk in the sixth and after two outs a double to right-center by center fielder Drew Campbell doubled the Cardinals' lead to 2-0. Two wild pitches ensued, allowing Campbell to score.
