No. 44 Harvard Holds Off Eagles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 44 Harvard held off a valiant effort from visiting Boston College 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Murr Center. The Eagles dropped to 5-12 on the season, while the Crimson moved to 12-5.
Derek Austin and Conor Mullins defeated the 33rd-ranked pair of Logan Weber and Andy Zhou in No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-3. BC nearly pulled out the doubles point, but Robert Wrzesinski and Brian Shi edged the team of Chris Grasel and Markus Nordby in a tiebreaker to give Harvard a 1-0 lead.
Austin carried his strong play into singles as he came back against Wrzesinski to force a third set tiebreaker before eventually falling in the No. 1 slot. Grasel also took his No. 2 singles match to the brink against Zhou but dropped a tight third set by one break.Â
Conor Mullins earned Boston College its lone point as he beat Lane Leschly in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in No. 5 singles. His brother Sean Mullins won the first set against Galen Lee but lost the second and third in the No. 6 slot.
Sunday marked the first meeting between the local schools since January of 2016.
BC travels to Worcester to face Holy Cross on Wednesday (April 3) before heading to North Carolina next weekend to take on No. 11 UNC on Friday (April 5) and Duke on Sunday (April 7).
