March 21, 2019 | Women's Hockey
This marks the third first-team All-America selection for Megan Keller and the fifth consecutive year that a BC blue liner has been on the All-America teams.
HAMDEN, Conn. – Boston College senior defender Megan Keller earned American Hockey Coaches Association All-America honors on Thursday night, earning first-team accolades for the third time in her career. The ACHA first-and second-team All-America squads were announced at the Frozen Four Celebration, hosted by Quinnipiac University.
Keller, a Patty Kazmaier Award Top-3 Finalist, is the only Hockey East representative among the six players earning first-team honors and the only three-time All-American among the 12 players earning 2019 All-American first-or-second team accolades. Joining Keller in first-team honors are Rensselaer goaltender Lovisa Selander, Ohio State defender Jincy Dunne, Wisconsin forward Annie Pankowski, and Clarkson forwards Loren Gabel and Elizabeth Giguere.
This marks the 16th All-America selection in program history and the fifth consecutive year that a BC blue liner has been on the All-America teams. Keller is the first Eagle to be a three-time first-team All-American and just the third defender overall, joining Cornell's Laura Fortino (2010, 2011, 2012) and Harvard's Angela Ruggiero (1999, 2000, 2003, 2004).
Nationally in 2018-19, the captain led the nation's blue liners in points (43), goals (19), goals per game (0.50), points per game (1.13), power-play goals (7) and game-winning goals (5). Keller's plus-39 rating and 3.32 shots on goal per game average both ranked fourth among defenders. Among all skaters in the country, Keller ranks in the top 20 in goals (t-19th), assists (t-18th), points (t-14th), power-play goals (t-2nd), power-play points (t-13th), game-winning goals (t-8th), plus-minus (t-7th).
Keller proved to be one of the nation's most dynamic players this season, impacting play at both ends of the ice on offense, defense and special teams. She was on the ice for 57 percent of BC's even-strength goals. Keller registered at least one point in 28-of-38 games played and had 11 multi-point outings on the year. Keller had eight game-winning points, scoring five and assisting on three. The Eagles surrendered 23.10 shots on goal per game, fourth fewest in the country.
The Farmington Hill, Mich., native also posted one of the best regular seasons in Hockey East history after setting the single-season points (37) and goals record (16) for a defender. The captain now holds the conference career and single-season points, goals and assists records by a defender. Her 16-21-37 scoring line in conference play was good for a tie for third overall while her plus-36 was tops. Keller led the league with five power-play goals in conference play and her five game-winning goals ranked second. She was named the Hockey East Player of the Month for January and has also earned two Player of the Week awards and a Defensive Player of the Week award.
Keller was the 2019 Hockey East Player of the Year and was the unanimous selection as the Hockey East Best Defenseman in addition to a unanimous selection to the conference's All-Star First Team. It was the second time in her career being named the league's player of the year – and she remains the only defender to ever earn the honor – and the third time being named the best defender and the fourth time in being named an All-Star First Team honoree.
Boston College (26-12-1) advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in program history before falling in overtime, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round to No. 4 Clarkson.
